I love coffee. If that wasn’t obvious enough. My coworkers have even renamed me “Jackiecuppacoffee” because I always have a coffee in my hand. So that’s where that name came from. I’m pretty sure I’m 92% coffee and 8% pizza, but that’s a story for another time. Fun fact: before my current job, I was a barista at a local coffee shop in my home town. It’s fitting, right? I learned A LOT about my favorite drink and it was a great experience with a great community. So without further ado, here is a list of the types of coffee drinks that everyone should know
1. Black Coffee
Now this is pretty self explanatory. Black coffee is a cup of straight up coffee with no add ins, like cream and sugar. This is how I drink my coffee when I’m not drinking an Americano. Most people opt for adding in at least some sugar, milk, or both. For me, I was forced to drink it black when I started drinking considering I am lactose intolerant, but now I can’t imagine drinking it any other way.
Possibly my favorite way to drink coffee when I can’t deal with carrying a cup around is a shot of espresso… or two.
Espresso is a strong style of coffee drink that is “pulled” from an espresso machine. Espresso shots can be enjoyed by themselves or used to create the numerous other types of coffee drinks you will learn about in this post. I’m talking about you cappuccinos and lattes.
A cappucino is an espresso-based coffee drink that was born in Italy. It is traditionally prepared with double espresso and steamed milk foam.
An americano is my go to. You can have this on ice or hot, depending on your preference… and the weather. Though if you are a New England native like myself, it’s iced all year round.
An americano consists of espresso shots and water, either hot or over ice. You can leave room for milk, sugar, cream etc. or drink it black… like yours truly.
5. Caffè Macchiato
A caffè macchiato, sometimes referred to as an espresso macchiato, is an espresso coffee drink with a small amount of milk, usually foamed. Similar to a cappuccino though with much less milk.
A coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk. Nowadays you can have your choice of milk- from regular to almond or soy.
This Italian coffee-based dessert is a great option for the warmer months. It typically takes the form of a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream topped with a shot of hot espresso.
8. Flat white
This coffee drink consists of espresso with microfoam. It is very similar to a latte, but smaller in volume and with less microfoam.
A cortado consists of espresso mixed with about an equal amount of warm milk to reduce the acidity. The milk in a cortado is steamed, but not as frothy as milk in a latte.
10. Café au lait
This coffee drink is a simple cup of coffee with hot milk added. It is not the same as a cup of coffee with typical milk or cream added, as that “whitener” is cold.
